Why is the screen fingerprint technology not popular? Lack of speed and precision

According to reports, the development of technology to embed fingerprint sensors into smartphone displays has been recognized as the highest goal in the field of biometrics for smartphones. As smartphone manufacturers continue to move toward the goal of “full screen” design, the screen fingerprint technology provides another way to further enhance the extremely important indicator – screen ratio.

Why is the screen fingerprint technology not popular? Lack of speed and precision

The fingerprints under the screen also provide the advantage of a future fan – in the increasingly homogenized mobile phone design, basically become a glass brick market, which is a much-needed differentiated competitive advantage.

Therefore, this emerging technology suddenly appears in the supply chain rumors about future mobile phones, especially the two biggest mobile phone manufacturers like Apple and Samsung, which is not surprising. A few years ago there were rumors that Samsung would introduce rumors of the Galaxy line of smartphones that embed fingerprint sensors in the display. In fact, Samsung's current button design – a pressure-aware, clickable virtual Home button – seems to be designed around the concept of under-screen fingerprints.

But so far, in addition to several concept devices released by Chinese manufacturers, the screen fingerprint technology has not been applied to mobile phones.

That's why when I evaluated Huawei's Mate RS Porsche design, I was most interested in this $2,000 (about RMB 12,735) mobile phone. Finally, the company released a mobile phone with screen fingerprint technology. The under-screen fingerprint technology designed by Huawei Mate RS Porsche is called “in-screen fingerprint”.

But after a few minutes of using this feature, my enthusiasm vanished. The process of registering fingerprints in the under-screen fingerprint sensor gave me a thorough understanding of the new fingerprint sensor, which is unacceptably slow compared to the power plant sensors that have been common in flagship models over the past few years. In the past few product cycles, the speed of the smartphone fingerprint sensor "å—–å—–" has spoiled us.

For Huawei to suddenly launch a flagship model phone with a price of up to 2,600 US dollars (about 16555 yuan), we have no reason to doubt. Huawei will definitely do its best to configure the best components for this phone, but these components are quite slow.

Android Central said that there are still some practical problems with the fingerprint technology under the screen. Since an optical sensor is used, it must actually "see" the fingerprint to scan the fingerprint. Therefore, when the user unlocks the mobile phone with his finger, the area around the key must have a certain brightness. For the daytime, there is no problem, but in a dim bar or bedroom? Its performance is problematic.

In 2018, the fingerprint under the screen will still be just a demonstration technique: although it works, it is slow and unreliable.

Especially on Mate RS, it takes a certain amount of time to find and press the fingerprint sensor under the screen (as with the fingerprint sensor "seeing" the fingerprint plane image, the current optical sensor requires pressure to function properly). Since the fingerprint sensor is located about a quarter of the top of the display, it is not easy to find it by touch alone - because the fingerprint sensor itself is embedded in the display, the user cannot feel its position. In addition, the fingerprint sensor embedded in the display does not provide vibration feedback to guide the user to find it. The user needs to stare at the phone and find the fingerprint sensor.

After a complicated process, many users will find that it is better to use Huawei's excellent face unlocking function, which is faster and more reliable.

Even after registering 4 fingerprints on Mate RS, I encountered fewer problems than using traditional fingerprint sensors in the past 3 years. In some cases, constantly changing the location of your phone means you can't unlock your phone. Therefore, I believe that optical fingerprint sensors are more susceptible to stains on the display, or because of my fingertips, or temperature changes, or other factors that need attention in everyday life. These may not be the case when using a traditional fingerprint sensor to unlock your phone.

It's cumbersome to use, and even if it's barely usable, it's too slow to make. It is worth noting that Huawei also offers two other excellent unlocking methods in Mate RS - face unlocking and fingerprint sensor on the back of the fuselage, because it is maddening to use the screen fingerprint alone to unlock the phone. .

Of course, the starting price of $2,000 makes Huawei and Porsche have enough budget to integrate so many spare parts in this phone. Mate RS itself is not a popular product, and sales will not be large. I can't imagine that Samsung will use a down-screen fingerprint sensor in a mobile phone with a price comparable to that of a traditional flagship mobile phone, and a capacitive fingerprint sensor on the back of the fuselage.

Android Central said that in fact, almost all mainstream big-name flagship phones have decided (or realize that the screen fingerprint technology is not mature) and instead use the proven and mature capacitive fingerprint sensor technology, while waiting for the maturity of the screen fingerprint technology. .

In summary, it is difficult for us to conclude that even without a dedicated infrared laser array like the Apple Face ID, the smartphone face unlocking technology is developing much faster than the screen fingerprint.

The demand for fingerprints under the screen will not ebb in the short term, but the screen fingerprint technology currently used in mobile phones is not mature enough to become the core part of modern smartphones. In the next two years, the fingerprint sensors in smartphones will be further improved in speed and accuracy.
